About the data

Measure history, roll calls, and committee proceedings are normalized from official congressional sources already in this corpus. Pages keep the source sentence and link to the record they were drawn from. Counts labeled derived are computed from those records. They are not official statistics.

The sitting Congress is refreshed from official files. A completed Congress is a fixed historical corpus, and it can include domains the sitting Congress does not yet have.

Legislative measures come from the GovInfo BILLSTATUS bulk data. Committee meetings, nominations, votes, and the Congressional Record are drawn from Congress.gov and GovInfo publications. A page that states a fact links the sentence it was taken from.

Legislative history on a bill page is normalized from official bill-status data. Roll-call totals come from the House Clerk and Senate LIS files those actions cite. The source sentence is kept with each action.

Measures

A measure is a bill or resolution introduced in the House or the Senate. Outcome counts are derived from the actions in the bill-status record.

Votes

A vote is a recorded roll call: a chamber decision with member positions. It is related to legislation when an official source says so. The list also keeps the vote when the question is procedural, a nomination, or a treaty.

Nominations

Each record is a presidential nomination sent to the Senate, including a partition when the Senate divided one nomination number. A record can name one person or a group. Counts are nomination records, not people. Position groups and individual nominees are counted separately from the records.

Treaties

A treaty stays before the Senate until the Senate gives its advice and consent or the treaty is returned or withdrawn.

Committees

The directory lists the committees and other bodies recorded for this Congress. Subcommittees are listed on each parent page.
